Description

Dramatic original map of German military operations in the North Sea and over Great Britain during the early stage of World War II in 1940.

The map shows overlapping maritime minefields. Four are maintained by the British: the German Bight, the Thames Estuary, the English Channel, and the North Sea coast of England. Three are maintained by Germany: the North Sea, Øresund, and the Bay of Kiel. Two are maintained by Denmark. And two by the Netherlands.

Successive arcs show German airplanes ranging 1000km over all of Great Britain, but the airport from which these theoretical planes were supposed to fly is not located.

Between France and Germany, the Siegfried Line and Air Defense Zone are shown, as is the Maginot Line.

On the left of the image are profiles of major vessels in the Royal Navy. Some of these have been crossed out, as they were destroyed - such as HMS Barham, the destruction of which was kept secret from the British public in the hope that Germany would not learn of it.
