Description

Attractive 1860s guide to New York by the mapmaker Humphrey Phelps including a colorful folding map of the city and a more unusual folding plate showing Central Park and other inset smaller maps and a view.

The image of Central Park is quite nice, as it straddles the bird's-eye view and map frontier, showing the background of the Upper West Side as mostly undeveloped farmland, with the Palisades across the Hudson in the distance.

Phelps's map of New York City bears an 1857 imprint date.
