Description

Stunning and scarce lithographed view of Paris, centered on the Île de la Cité and Notre Dame, apparently taken from a Montgolfiere located above the Hall of Justice. This great view shows what was considered to be, in 1840, the Ninth Arrondissement, although redistricting now means that this is the heart of the Fourth and Fifth Arrondissement.

This print came from a set produced by the Sebastian Avanzo publishing house, lithographed by Jules Arnout, and drawn by Nicolas Chapuy. The set, Paris et ses Arrondissemens, shows each of the twelve districts of Paris in magnificent detail, with building-by-building demarcation easily visible and detail extending to individual windows and features. The images produced as part of this project are a remarkable preservation of the nineteenth-century layout of the city and came nearly exactly one hundred years after the previous great aerial view of the city produced under Michel-Étienne Turgot.

This bird's-eye view shows the Arrondissement in question in brighter colors, while neighboring regions, such as the Quartier Latin (student district), shaded a darker color. Marvelous features abound on the work, with the bridges over the Seine being of particular interest. The Pont de Notre Dame, which has been rebuilt numerous times, is shown in its configuration that lasted from 1507 to 1853, although the houses which lined the bridge (akin to London Bridge), have already been removed for stability. In addition, the edges of the city are shown not far away, displaying the still-limited spread of the city.
