Description
A Philadelphia Rarity
Rare separately published map of Philadelphia, lithographed by James McGuigan.
The map is hand colored by wards, with significant text sections describing the City's Fire Alarm Districts, Passenger Railway Company, public halls and theaters, public squares and street number systems.
We find virtually nothing about Thomas Frear, other than an announcement regarding the publication of this map in the Philadelphia Inquirer of May 20, 1869, noting the innovative element of the inclusion of fire districts and street numbers on the map.
The map was later re-issued in 1876 for Philadelphia's Centennial with significantly different graphics.
