Description

Gorgeous, engraved view of Prague west of the Vltava River, comprising one sheet of Hans Wechter and Johannes De Ram's extremely rare four-sheet view of the city, which is known in only two examples.

The view is taken from Petřín hill, like many of the most famous panoramas of the city. It depicts scenes of daily life in the foreground, as well as the rudimentary details of hundreds of buildings farther back. Prague Castle is visible as one of the main landmarks in the background.

We have not been able to locate a fully-digitized example of the view, however, the left-most sheet can be seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/britishlibrary/50263619187

This view should not be confused with Claesz Janszoon Visscher's view of Prague, which is also based on work by Hans Wechter.

Rarity

The view is known in only two examples, one at the British Library and the other at the BNF.

Were the full view to appear on the market, it would probably command a price in the range of $50,000 to $75,000. But, to our knowledge, it has never been on the market (no records in RBH nor OldMaps.com).

Condition Description
One sheet only, of four. Faint toning. A few soiling spots and minor issues at the edges.
