Description

Valk and Schenk's map of Sussex with towns, rivers, and forests. Traditional subdivisions in Sussex called "rapes" are also labeled.

In the upper left, cherubs hold up the coats of arms of William de Albania (William d'Aubigny), Earle of Chichester & Arundell; Iohn Fitz Allan (John Fitzalan), Earle of Sussex et Arundell; Phillip Howard, Earle of Arundell; and Robert Radcliffe, Earle of Sussex. At the top is the royal coat of arms of England. Mermaids flank a banner with the scale at the bottom right. There are also two ships and two compass roses in the English Channel, here called "The British Sea".

Original hand color in outline, later color in decorative elements. Wide margins. Some soiling. Small hole above the 40° longitude label.
