Description
Fine example of Valk and Schenk's map of the western coast of England, showing the county of Chestershire and including the important shipping town of Liverpool. This map was issued in the late 17th century and represents a later state of Jan Jansson's map of the region published for his atlas on the British counties.
The map is highly detailed and shows Chester as it stood in the 1600s, with early roads shown, rivers accurately mapped, windmills displayed, and other fascinating detail. Interestingly, walled areas, possibly enclosed gardens, are shown.
The map includes decorative elements such as coats of arms, two cartouches, a sailing ship, and a compass rose.
