Original English Color!
Rare map of Asia, Africa and Europe, from Ephraim Pagitt's Christianographie, or the Description . . . of the Christian World, not subject to the Pope, first published in London in 1635.
The map shows Corea as an Island, and unusual projection for Japan and names Luzon (Luconia) and Mindenao in the Philippines.
The primary theme of the map is locating the Christian peoples of the world who are not Catholic. The map includes the following annotations:
- The Abissine Christians Under Prester John
- Patriarch of Alexandria The christians under Aegypt Called Gophti under the Turks
- Christianitie In a maner lost for want of teachers here have bene some 100 of Bps and novos only left (sic)
- Greek Chirstians The Patr. mixt with Turkes
- Mushall the see of the Nesterian Patriarch
- Persia In this Contri are Armenians and many sorts of Christians
- Tarsus Some Christians Some nevit that the wise men came to Christ duelt here
Pagitt's book is illustrated with 5 maps, of which the map is included. While at first appearance, the map appears to be half of a world map, in fact Shirley notes that "the American half of [Pagitt's World] map was also printed separately for inclusion into Pagitt's work." We have owned one example of the work (sold in 2009), which included both maps, along with maps of Europe, Asia and Africa.
The map is very rare on the market, this being the second example we have offered for sale in the past 25 years.
