Description

Fine original antique copperplate engraving showing the large comet that appeared near Perseus and Cassiopea in the night sky between April and May, 1677. The map appeared in Johan Voigt's Christmässige Betrachtung Des Cometen Im Aprili Anno 1677, one of several books that was published regarding the comet.

The comet was observed throughout Europe, and Voigt's contemporary Helvelius also wrote a book regarding the comet. In the main image displayed on this plate, the comet is depicted between Perseus, Andromeda, the Triangle, and Cassiopea, which is where it was visible in Europe. The two lower images show how the tilt of the comet's tail changed in the week between the twenty-second of April, close to when it was firs observed, and the twenty-ninth of April.

Johann Henrich Voigt was a noted German mathematician and astronomer, who produced astronomical almanacs for a wide audience. Comet phenomena were described in these almanacs. Alongside this comet, he also described the comets of 1664 and 1665, as well as the 1682 appearance of Halley's Comet. Voigt held to the belief that comets were divine warnings.

Apparently based on the observations Father Athanasius Kircher, a late 17th century Jesuit scholar with many interests, the print shows the sun with numerous dark clouds emanating from the outside. These are solar flares and surface eruptions, based on the observations of Kircher and Scheiner in 1635. Kircher's observations were originally published in his masterpiece, titled Mundus subterraneus (The Underground World).
