Description

Fascinating geological map of England and Wales, hand-colored to reflect twenty different geological regions, with a color code on the left side of the plate. The map shows eighteen different types of sedimentary strata, quaternary deposits, granite, and metamorphic rocks.

Highly detailed, the coloring of this geological map bestows on it a decorative element. The map includes copious notes, naming all of the ins and outs of the many geological features, showing the locations of fossil plants, lead mines, coal seams, and important boundaries.

The map was prepared with the assistance of Roderick Impey Murchison, F.R.S., the President of the Royal Geographical Society. Murchison was an important geologist who was particularly notable for describing the base of the Silurian system. Having previously participated in the establishment of the Devonian system and later named the Permian system, he was a highly notable figure in British geology for many reasons. He cultivated his personality in and out of the field, even being named one of Vanity Fair's men of the day.

The map is both remarkably detailed and a visually striking production.
