Scarce Map of St. Kitts

Fine original antique map of Saint Kitts, showing the island in full with nice detail. This map is based on earlier charts issued by Nicolas Bellin, the most important French maritime cartographer of the 18th century.

The map shows rivers, streams, topography, and more. Charleston appears. Saint Kitts proved to be an important island during the American Revolution during the Battle of Saint Kitts, in which a British fleet defeated a larger French fleet led by the Comte de Grasse immediately after the revolution.

The map appeared in Le Boucher's Histoire de la Derniere Guerre, entre La Grande-Bretagne, et les Etas-Unis de l'Amerique. This history of the American Revolution was published in Paris in 1787 and provided a contemporary look at the style in which the war was fought and its effects.
