Description

One of the earliest American maps of Vermont from the first American gazetteer.

Joseph T. Scott, a Philadelphia engraver and publisher, issued his gazetteer during the early days of American cartography. Scott included much detail of rivers, counties, roads, and towns. This map of Vermont includes precise detail of settlements and roads, including Govr. Chittenden's home in the north.

Also shown is Dartmouth College, just across the Connecticut River, which is not shown on the map of New Hampshire.

Vermont [with rare Tanner pricelist]

Vermont, produced by Henry Schenk Tanner and published in New York in 1847, is a wonderful representation of the state during the mid-19th century. Demarcated by county, each section is hand-colored, lending a visual clarity to the geographical divisions of the region. Its provenance is further solidified by a mounted pricelist, which distinctly locates Tanner's operations at No. 237 Broadway, an address he is known to have occupied exclusively in the year 1847.
