Description

Scarce double hemisphere map of the world, published by Harrison in London.

This is one of the earliest world map's to illustrate the discoveries of Captain James Cook on his third and final voyage, which resulted in the discovery of Hawaii and later the site of Cook's Death in 1779.  The map is dominated by the newly released details of Cook's voyages, with notable advances in the cartographic treatment of New Zealand, Australia and the Northwest Coast of America, including Alaska and the Aleutian Islands.

The area east of the Mississippi River is dominated by the words "British Empire", which of course by 1782 was on the verge of formal termination.  With the Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown in 1781, it remained only for the signing of a formal treaty to end the Empire's control of the United States.
