Attractive original antique plan of the canal which tracks between the Cannocks just north of Birmingham and the Severn River near Bristol. This canal is now known as the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, known colloquially as the Staff and Worcs.
The canal passes through or near cities including Stafford, Cank, Wolverhampton, and Kidderminster. It was finished in the year of the publication of this map and first used the year after.
The opening of this canal came at a time when the government and private companies were actively increasing the navigable miles available in England, and particularly in the North and Midlands. This helped to jumpstart the Industrial Revolution by allowing for the increased transport of goods. Birmingham, which this canal passes through the suburbs, is a poignant reminder of the early importance of canals. It is said that Birmingham has the most canals in Europe.
