Fantastic, rare map of the Dartmouth College campus and the surrounding town as seen under a magnificent, fresh snowfall. The image, dating from the late 1940s or early 1950s, was produced by the noted Princeton-educated watercolor artist A. K. D. Healy, who was then teaching at Middlebury College and would later transfer to Yale.
The map shows the campus as seen from the south, with the Connecticut River passing through the western part of the map and the map centered on Dartmouth Green. Numerous college buildings, including dorms, libraries, observatories, and fraternities are named. Detail extends into Hanover. Unlike most other views of college campuses, this one takes place in the winter, which reflects what students mostly experience in the Northeast.
The map can be dated using the lack of dormitories along Choate Road (built in the mid-1950s). In all, this is a very desirable and rare view of the campus.
Rarity
OCLC lists a single example of this bird's-eye view, located in the Dartmouth collections. We were unable to trace any further examples.
