Description

A finely engraved official chart of Humboldt Bay on California’s North Coast, published in 1914 by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey under the supervision of O.H. Tittmann. Based on triangulation, topographic, and hydrographic surveys conducted between 1869 and 1913, the map provides an accurate depiction of one of California’s most significant natural harbors north of San Francisco Bay.

This chart is an important record of early 20th-century coastal development. It depicts the entrance channel, sand spits, mud flats, islands, and soundings in fathoms, with the town grid of Eureka rendered in striking detail, including wharves, mills, and the adjacent railroad lines. Samoa and Fairhaven appear on the opposite spit, and Fort Humboldt is marked just south of Eureka. Contour lines, swamps, and marshland delineate the terrain inland.

The tide table inset presents mean times and tidal heights for Humboldt Bay and nearby stations including Trinidad and San Francisco. Notably, the map includes standard symbols and conventions of the Coast Survey, such as bottom types, buoy markings, and storm signal information for mariners.
