Description

This detailed British Admiralty chart, titled Port Royal and Kingston Harbors, is based on surveys conducted in 1874 and corrected to 1881, with larger corrections to 1897 and smaller corrections to 1915.

The map offers a precise hydrographic depiction of the southern coast of Jamaica, emphasizing soundings, navigation channels, and coastal features critical for maritime navigation. The map prominently depicts Kingston, the island’s growing commercial hub, with a clear street grid and key features to the north, including Allmann Town and the Race Course, indicative of the city's rapid expansion during the late nineteenth century.

To the south, the chart highlights Port Royal, once a thriving center of trade and piracy in the Caribbean before much of it was destroyed by the devastating earthquake of 1692. Two inset maps enrich the sheet: one of the Ship Channel, offering a closer view of the critical maritime approach, and a detailed plan of Port Royal Harbor, focusing on its fortifications and anchorage.

Includes a small profile view of the approach to Port Royal, etc.
