Description

A highly detailed and authoritative early 20th-century nautical chart of Monterey Bay, California, published by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. This chart represents the culmination of decades of hydrographic and topographic surveying by one of the most scientifically advanced mapping agencies of the era.

Spanning from Santa Cruz in the north to Monterey and Pacific Grove in the south, the chart provides soundings in fathoms at mean lower low water, with a bathymetric contour line and hundreds of individual soundings carefully plotted. The topography along the coastline is rendered in fine detail, particularly around the urban grids of Santa Cruz, Capitola, Watsonville, and Monterey.

The map includes the railroad lines, harbors, and key infrastructure visible in both Santa Cruz and Monterey. Notable is the fine rendering of the Monterey Peninsula, including the early development of Pacific Grove, "New Monterey", and the U.S. Army's Presidio of Monterey. The chart is also one of the earlier federal documents to show Santa Cruz Harbor as a charted entity, even though it was not formally developed until the 1960s.

Large compass roses with variation indicators, tide information, and sailing instructions are included.
