Description

Scarcest of the Thomas Cowperthwait editions of this seminal map, reflecting the contemporary knowledge of the west. Shows Spanish Trail, Lewis & Clark's Canoe Route, Oregon Trail, early roads, towns, Indian Tribes, mining claims, etc. This is the first map of the West to appear in an American Atlas The first edition appeared in second issue of the 1846 Mitchell Universal Atlas and was continuously updated thereafter. The difference editions is quite striking. In this edition, Fremont's Great Basin info appears. The route to San Diego from the Gila has been included. The elevation of the pass in the Sierras is removed. The Owens Valley (River and Lake) are present. Humboldt and Nicollet Lakes are added. Fremont's route from Walker Lake to Salt Lake is shown. This is also the last edition of the map to predate the addition of counties to the map in 1852 and the last to use the old plate, which shows about 2 degrees less information east of the Rocky Mountains. The tributaries of the Upper Colorado River are much updated, adding the White River, Red River etc. The Gila River is shown with with its terminus in the Colorado River andits course much improved. The apocryphal Sevier River along Rio Colorado is gone. The border with Mexico is also substantially corrected. A good copy, bearing very scarce the 1851 Thomas Cowperthwait imprint. Narrow top and right margins.
