Description

17th-century double-page engraved map of Gelderland, in the eastern part of the Netherlands, with the cities of Nijmegen, Graest, Emmerick, and others shown. The map includes a decorative cartouche with the emblem of the Holy Roman Emperor and a Dutch surveyor.

This is the Valk and Schenk reissue of a Jansson engraving first issued in the 1640s. Their imprint appears in the lower left.

The Citadel of Antwerp

Attractive original antique plan of the fort in Antwerp, built during the Dutch Revolt to protect the city. Following the publication of this map, it would see significant action during the Napoleonic Wars, where it would be defended by reluctant to surrender Bonapartists. It would be destroyed in the late 18th century, and is now hope to the present-day neighborhood of Zuid.
