Description

Nice full hand-color example of Kaerius's map of Hessen in central Germany, which appeared in the Mercator-Hondius Atlas Minor. This fantastic map shows the region around Gottingen and Kessel in this forested and rural part of central Germany.

The map represents a detailed look at the cities, towns, and geography of the region. Many places are named, and the map includes a nice decorative cartouche.

The German state of Hessen is most well known for its subsequent supply of mercenaries to the American Revolution, but at the time it had been repeatedly razed during the 30 Years' War. Shortly after, Frederick II would rule Hessen with his Enlightenment ideals, but his debts would accumulate, necessitating the loaning of soldiers.
