Charting Fridtjof Nansen's Polar Expedition

Detailed map of the North Polar Regions, prepared following the Nansen's return from his expedition to the North Polar Regions between 1893 and 1896.

Fridtjof Nansen (1861 - 1930) was a Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. He led the team that made the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888, cross-country skiing on the island, and won international fame after reaching a record northern latitude of 86 o14' during his North Pole expedition of 1893-96.

In 1895, Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen left the expedition and attempted to become the first to reach the North Pole. Their effort was unsuccessful and they soon became lost and were presumed dead. However, in June 1897, he encountered the British Explorer Frederick Jackson, during Jackson's expedition to explore Franz Josef Land, resulting in the rescue of the two explorers.

The map shows Nansen's route between 1893 and his discovery in 1897.
