Description

With Early Ranchos Still Shown

Scarce early plan of Orange County showing the county from its border with San Diego to its Los Angeles border.

One of the most notable features of the map is the location of a number of early Ranchos.

Early layouts of the towns of Santa Ana, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Laguna, Tustin, El Toro, Corona, an Juan Capistrano, and Irvine are shown.  A few early town names appear, such a Talbert, Fairview, Smeltzer, Wintersburg, etc.

The map is divided by township ranges and sections, these are all numbered by area. This is a common configuration for maps of the county from the 1910s, although this is the earliest such example we have seen.

Finley had published Orange County maps since at least 1889, although these earlier ones are much more rudimentary.
