Description

Attractive original antique map of the western Indian Ocean, showing the region's many islands, including Madagascar, as well as the Tanzanian coastline. This map originally appeared in Pierre de Hondt's 1747 Historie Generale des Voyages, a travel book that was supplemented by maps engraved by J. Vander Schley.

The map is very detailed, with numerous islands coastal details, reefs, and more shown. Numerous notes explain the exploratory history of the region, noting the discoveries made. This is based on a French map, with a Dutch-language title provided below and a French to Dutch translation guide shown.

J.V. Schley Biography

Jakob van der Schley was a skilled draftsman and engraver who operated out of Amsterdam and had strong ties with the Hague. He was trained by Bernard Picart and his style resembles that of the elder man. Van der Schely was known for intricately engraved portraits and frontispieces. He signed most of the plates used in the Hague edition of the Abbe Prevost's Histoire generale des voyages
