Description

The First Official Pakistani Map of Pakistan's Largest City.

First edition of the Survey of Pakistan map of Karachi, Pakistan's largest city. Located on the Indian Ocean, this map shows the dense layout of this city now known as Pakistan's financial and industrial center.

The map shows numerous railroads and railyards, as well as numerous government buildings and other points of interest, shown in red. Very interesting, from an urban development point of view, is that the map shows the location of greenery subdivided by type: grass, trees, palms, cactuses, plantains, and vegetable gardens are all indicated.

The verso includes a route map of Karachi and its surrounding areas. The map extends outwards to the airport and to neighboring villages, going to the ocean and up the Malir River. An index lists hundreds of place names, including 174 schools in the Karachi area.

Pakistan split from India in 1947. The surveys for this map began in 1948 and lasted to '49, having been supplemented with aerial photography in 1950-51.
