Description

The Triumph of Faith

Remarkable 9 sheet panorama of a triumphal procession of figures from the Old and New Testaments, published in Paris and engraved by Nicolas de Larmessin.

The work is a mid 17th Century interpretation of the Triumph of Faith, by the Venetian Renaissance master Tiziano Vecelli (also known as Titlan), first engraved in about 1510.

This monumental work is essentially an illustrated timeline of Biblical history, centered on Christ, illustrating events in the Old and New Testament from Adam and Eve (far left) to St. Christopher and St. Francis (far right).  Christ is at the center, surrounded by the Church Fathers, riding in a chariot drawn by an eagle and a winged lion and ox.

We locate examples of the image in the Victoria and Albert Museum, Bibliotheque National de France. Convent Saint-Jacques, rue des Tanneries à Paris, the Church of Saint-Vincent in Combs-la-Ville and the Rijksmuseum d’Amsterdam.

The original Titian image was reproduced by the Phaidon Press in Vienna, 1937.
