The Sunshine City
Attractive vintage pictorial map of St. Petersburg, Florida, showing the mid-century extent of the city. Streets, buildings, and coastal points of interest are named.
Surrounding the map are descriptions of the various activities which can be undertaken year-round in "America's Convenient Playground."
The verso includes text and further photos attempting to lure travelers and potential residents to the city. A further map shows St. Petersburg's location with distances to various East Coast cities.
This map is dated to around 1945 due to the appearance of the Florida Military Academy (Admiral Farragut Academy) which opened that year, but as yet limited development in the north of the peninsula. It is unlikely that the map dates to much later due to the quote that "Less than half a century ago the southern end of Pinellas Peninsula . . . was virgin jungle, known only to the Indians and a few white pioneers." While development on the peninsula had started as early as the early 1880s with the arrival of a railway terminus, it is unlikely that this statement refers to anytime past 1903, when St. Petersburg was incorporated.
