Description

Royal Geographical Society-published map showing the route taken by Edmund Kennedy into the interior of Queensland. The map names numerous places along the Victoria and Warrego Rivers, which were traveled and explored extensively by Kennedy's party.

The expedition in question shown was started in March of 1847 and went up the Victoria River. He followed the earlier routes taken by Mitchell, departing from Sydney and heading northwest. Having set up a basecamp, he attempted to see if the river turned towards the Gulf of Carpentaria, but when he saw the river turned back on itself (and his supplies were destroyed by aboriginals). He returned back to Sydney along the Warrego River. Kennedy would die on a separate expedition a year later.
