Early American Sea Chart of the Coast of North Carolina
Scarce single sheet sea chart of the coast of North Carolina, published by E & G.W. Blunt.
Offered separately by the Blunt firm beginning the the late 1820s, this is one of the earliest separately published charts to cover the coast of North Carolina. The Beacon at Federal Point is shown (built 1814) and by 1817, there were three lights. The Smith's Island Lighthouse is shown, built in 1826. The Pamlico Lighthouse and the Light vessel off Marsh Point are shown, built in 1828. Several more lighthouses are added in the Cape Fear River since the earliest state of the chart.
The chart is oriented with west at the the top and includes six inset charts of harbors, including:
- Cape Fear River from its entrance to Smithville
- Beaufort Harbor
- Cape Fear
- Cape Lookout
- Hatteras Shoals
- Bar & Roads of Occracock
The example at Yale is catalogued as having been issued between about 1827 and 1850, an address consistent with firm's operations from 179 Water street, corner of Burling slip, in New York City.
