Description

Original 17th-century engraved map of the Middle East, showing Turkey, the Holy Land, Part of the Arabian Peninsula, and Persia.

The map is highly detailed and attractively engraved, with many towns, rivers, and other features shown. Relief is shown pictorially.

This map was published in Amsterdam by the publisher Peter Cluver. Cluver's Introductio in Universam Geographiam (first issued in 1629) was re-issued many times over the next 100 years, with maps continuously being incorporated by various publishers. This present map was based on the work of the German mathematician Adam Olearius, who wrote about his travels to Persia.
