Description

Attractive original copperplate engraving of a port and city, apparently the city of Cadiz in southern Spain.

The city is shown on a peninsula, with many ships located in the adjacent bay and ocean. A tower stands at the end of the peninsula, and several canons are firing.

This view was produced by Pierre Aveline, one of the foremost viewmakers of the 18th century. Usually, Aveline's views contain a title and short description of the city shown, which this one is lacking.
