Description

Original antique view published in the early 18th century showing the straits of the Dardanelles, which links the Mediterranean with the Black Sea.

The view shows Constantinople from the north, across the straits. Numerous ships sail past, highlighting the maritime importance of the area, an impression which is furthered by the number of defensive buildings shown. A key at the bottom lists 20 places of interest.

This view was published in Paris by Pierre Aveline, one of the foremost European viewmakers of the 18th century.
