Description

Attractive original antique sea chart of the area around Civitavecchia in Italy, about thirty miles up the coast from Rome's port of Ostia.

The map focuses on maritime detail, showing the location of dangerous rocks and reefs. Numerous soundings are provided, and the extent of the city and castle are shown.

The port in Civitavecchia dates to the second century, when it was constructed by Emperor Trajan. At the time of this map's making, it had just passed into the hands of the French Empire in 1806; before, it had been controlled by the Papal States.

Rarity

The charts from Heather's  New Mediterranean Pilot . . . are extremely rare on the market.  This is the first example of the chart we have ever seen.
