The First Printed View of Singapore

Rare early view of Singapore, published issued less than 10 years after the settlement was founded by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles.

Colburn's view is based upon a painting by Royal Navy Captain Robert James Elliot. The view shows Singapore from Government Hill, with an already robust cityscape, with numerous buildings and a lively port, with Singapore Roads in the distance.

The view was published in Journal of an embassy from the Governor-General of India to the courts of Siam and Cochin-China  by John Crawfurd; published 1828.

Robert James Elliot Biography

Robert James Elliot  was a British naval officer, painter, and topographical draughtsman.

Elliot entered the British Navy on February 26, 1802. He rose to the level of commander by 1814.

Elliot is perhaps best known for his remarkable sketches of India, published as Views in the East in 1930. Elliot is also known to have produced the first view of Singapore, published for the narrative of Crawfurd's mission in 1828.
