Lively pictorial bird's-eye view of New Jersey, published by Harvey Hutter & Co. in New York, in c. 1989. This poster forms part of a series of city-focused views that play on the famous New Yorker cover, overemphasizing the importance of the city they show.
The map emphasizes the traffic on New Jersey's various "turnpikes" and shows a host of other detail. Atlantic City, Rutgers, Newark, and Manhattan are all visible. The Appalachian Trail and the Delaware Water Gap cut through the upper left of the map. The rest of the world is represented by New York, Canada, and Alaska, with little detail.
The present view is one of a large series of images that riffed on the Steinberg concept while substituting other American and worldwide cities. Steinberg's original work has been the subject of almost-countless parodies, including one for the release of Moscow on the Hudson by Columbia Pictures, which resulted in a copyright infringement lawsuit.
