Description

Original 18th-century engraved view of the beautiful city of Venice. The city is here viewed from across the lagoon from the south, with the view centered on the marvelous St. Mark's Square that contains its namesake church and the city's Palace of the Doges.

Visible in the foreground are many sailing and merchant ships, which highlight the city's importance as a center of Mediterranean trade. Several reduced buildings also appear in the foreground, likely belonging to the San Giorgio Islands. Behind the view gives way to the towering buildings of the city.

A key at the bottom of the map names 26 points of interest, which are primarily churches. Their steeples are seen above the waterways that connect the city.

This view was published by Pierre Aveline, one of the foremost viewmakers of the first part of the 18th century.
