Description
Early 18th-century copperplate print showing the capital of Portugal, as seen from the sea.
The city is attractively portrayed, with its many churches and castles rising up the hills of Lisbon. Ships sail in the view's foreground. A key at the bottom lists 28 points of interest.
Unfortunately, few, if any, of the buildings shown in this view survive to the present day due to a 1755 earthquake leveling much of the city.
This view was published by Pierre Aveline, one of the foremost viewmakers of the first part of the 18th century.
