Description

Fine engraved images of a Dutch Merchant ship from the East India trade, published  by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, one of the foremost Italian mapmakers of the 17th century.

In addition to his famous output of maps, Coronelli produced numerous beautiful images of boats for his Atlante Veneto. Because of the publishing eccentricities of that book, the ships tend to be rarer today than many of the maps.

Interestingly, we can tell something about how the present image was printed by closely examining the edges of the ship images, and how they interact with the intricate decorative borders that surround them. The boats and border were printed from separate copper plates but on the same sheet. This practice was not unheard of but is rather unusual.
