Description

Attractive original antique view of the port city of Marseille in France. The view shows the city from the east as seen from the famous Mont de la Garde, Marseille's natural high point and now home to the famous Notre Dame de la Garde.

The view centers on the Old Port of Marseille which was once a primary port for tall ships (as seen in this view), but which now houses small sailboats and yachts.  West of this, the heart of the old city is seen, though it does not extend far before fields start again.

A key at the bottom lists nineteen places of interest, providing details regarding the layout of the port and related buildings, as well as naming many of still famous buildings, like the Fort St. Jean (now Fort Saint-Nicholas). This view was published by Pierre Aveline, one of the foremost viewmakers of the first part of the 18th century.
