Description

Signed copy of the 1944 edition of Ernest Dudley Chase's pictorial map tribute to the history of flight.

The map provides a pictorial history of flying dating from 1670, with fifty inset drawings and descriptions of flying successes and failures accompanied by the names of pilots. The depiction of Jacques Besnier in 1675 harks back to a fantastical time in the history of aviation when he was able to make a self-powered flapping tool that allowed him to cross a river. The late 18th-century sees the start of more serious Montgolfiere-type contraptions, before the many contraptions of early airplanes seen. A cautionary inset relays the history of Daedalus.

The map is a polar projection with the north pole slightly to the left of the center of the page. Numerous cities and towns are named, and fifteen depictions of all types of planes scatter the map. A great decorative image.

This is a scarce variant of the map, which contains a navy blue border and corner insets.

This is one of the rarest of the Dudley Chase large-format maps, this being the first time we have offered it for sale.
