Description

Rare 1946 First Edition.

Attractive vintage pictorial map of Southern California (covering San Diego, Imperial, Orange, Riverside, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino Counties), produced by Claude G. Putnam and Karl F. Brown in 1946.

The map shows the Anza and Butterfield Trails as well as El Camino Real. Numerous vignettes in the border of the map draw attention to the history of the region. Portola, Junipero Sera, Cabrillo, and others are depicted.

The Roads to Romance map proved extremely popular and went into many editions in the following decades.

Rarity

While the later configurations of the Roads to Romance map are less rare, the 1946 is scarce; this being the second time we have had it in over 25 years of selling maps in Southern California.

The map was reissued a number of times, often with significant changes, between 1946 and 1965, with editions dated 1946, 1950, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1957, 1958, 1950, 1961, 1963 and 1965 known to exist.
