Description

A great Lindgren rarity, being one of the calendars produced for Spokane business to advertise the Lindgren print and sign-making businesses. This form of advertising was ingenious - it contained relevant local information that would have been of use to Spokanites and engrained them as part of the local community.

The calendar starts off by referencing baseball predictions made in the previous month's calendar, indicating that there were monthly issues of the Lindgren calendars. Typical Lindgren humor can be found throughout, interspersed with local events, such as fairs, contests, and conventions. A number of references are made to posts, postmen, and dogs, possibly in reference to the "dawg days" of summer, although this is far from certain. This is repeated at the top with the slogan "Spokane --- This Year's Host to Every Legion Post!" The title also makes reference to the Lindgren Brothers' sign business, calling them "The Legionnaires who made 'signs' before they could talk!"

It can be imagined that these signs would have been important for jumpstarting the Lindgren Brother's careers, by popularizing their sense of humor throughout Spokane and allowing them to develop their printmaking skills locally before become nationally renowned.

Rarity

We have been unable to trace another of these separately-issued calendars. The only other reference to a Lindgren calendar we could find was a copyright entry for a 1947 Lindgren sports season calendar. The highly ephemeral nature of these month-by-month calendars explains their extreme rarity today.
