Fantastic Southern California real estate promotion map from 1920s seeking buyers for lots in the High School Tract in Glendora.
The tract included the blocks of Ben Lomond, Marcile, California, Wildwood, and Valencia, between Foot Hill Boulevard and Carroll Street.
The map and pamphlet include wonderful and often somewhat random persuasive elements, these include the cartoon below the map itself (Dora: "No wonder Sister Eve fell - I'm tempted to grab this bird" Glen: [offering an orange] "Yes we-haven-no apples to-day - lets get married and build a home here"); big block letters arch over the hills in the background reading "HEAVEN"; in the sky are the words "Sell it with sunshine". In the orange groves adjacent to the development tract is text reading "Golden Goddess in the Gardens of the Valley of Eden. Honey Mooners among the Orange Blossoms."
Louis J. Wilde could be the former Mayor of San Diego who left the office under a cloud of scandal in 1921 and then moved to Los Angeles. A search of Newspapers.com returns advertisements for the Glendora High School Tract from 1923. Wilde died in 1924. Though we have not definitively determined that the two Louises are the same, this development might be the final act of a disgraced San Diego mayor.
