Description

First Italian War of Independence.

Scarce antique map of Italy by A.R. Fremin, issued in Paris during the First Italian War of Independence.

The war was fought by a plethora of Italian forces against the Austrian Empire and then the French Republic. It was related to the Revolutions of 1848 generally, and specifically formed a stage in the process of Italian Unification.

The war was precipitated in part by riots in Venice and Milan, which are here shown as part of the Lombardy vassal state of the Austrian Empire.
