Description

A nice example of Bowen's decorative double hemisphere map of the World, published in London. The map is engraved in an elaborate style, with allegorical imagery of the known peoples of the world shown at the corners of the map and a highly decorative cartouche. At the bottom is a curious representation of the earth as seen from outside the heavens.

The map itself includes a large amount of very interesting information. In the tropics and low latitudes, a substantial amount of information is provided regarding the trade winds and the monsoons. The east coast of Australia is unknown and New Zealand is largely incomplete. The Northwest coast of America is incomplete above the Straits of Anian, and Jesso (Hokkaido). The map names the Sea of Korea.

An interesting, informative, and decorative map.

Although he died in poverty, he was widely acknowledged for his expertise and was appointed as mapmaker to both George II of England and Louis XV of France. His business was carried on by his son, Thomas Bowen. He also trained many apprentices, two of whom became prominent mapmakers, Thomas Kitchin and Thomas Jeffreys.
