Description

Unrecorded variant of an uncommon advertisement for a railroad into the White Mountains. Published in 1879 by the Portland & Ogdensburg Railroad, this map shows relief in the picturesque mountain chain between the Connecticut River ad the Maine border.

The map shows part of the route of the financially-troubled Portland & Ogdensburg railroad, which was supposed to connect Portland, Maine, and Ogdensburg, New York. The railroad had been chartered in 1867 and connected Portland to the White Mountains by 1875, with the Vermont portion completed in 1877. Shortly thereafter, the railroad went bankrupt and was broken off. The railroad maintained operations following bankruptcy, as evidenced by this pamphlet, and was finally reorganized in 1884.

The map is supplemented by pictures showing the White Mountains and railcars. The verso includes a railroad map of the region serviced by the railroad and its connections. In all, a scarce and interesting pamphlet of a forgotten time in the development of the White Mountains.

Rarity

We note only one other example of this map, a variant held by the Rumsey Map Library at Stanford and also published in 1879.
