Illustrating The Montgolfier Brothers Hot Air Balloon -- The First Manned Flight

Rare view of Paris, illustrating 4 different types of early hot air balloons.

The balloon to the right of the title is an early image of the hot air balloon flown by Joseph and Étienne Montgolfier of Ardèche in France, in Versailles in September 1783, the earliest recorded example of  manned flight.

The other images of hot air balloons are likely examples of early attempts at manned flight and may be an early Montgolfier prototype (left of the title) and examples of early models by other hot air balloon pioneers.

The view is apparently unrecorded.

Great lithographed view of Paris showing the Rive Droite from the Place du Chatelet to the Hotel de Ville, with remnants of the old, "Pumps of Notre Dame" seen on the bridge in the foreground. Detail is fabulous with the geometric layout of the city richly evident, and it, along with the titling that states that the view was drawn from above the Marche de Fleurs, suggests that the view was based on one sketched in a Montgolfiere.
