Description

Great vintage poster railing against the storage of nuclear waste in temporary facilities in Maine. This poster, produced for the organization C.A.N.T. (Citizens Against Nuclear Trash), an organization active in the 80s, particularly in the states of Maine and Louisiana.

The image features a skull overlaid onto the outline of the state of Maine, with its eyes replaced by radiation symbols. Department of Energy briefings hearings are listed as occurring throughout the state.

This poster reflects the battle against the storage of nuclear waste from the Yankee Power Plant in temporary facilities near Wiscasset. The Maine Yankee Power Plant produced waste without a long-term storage plan. The push for long-term storage facilities in the 80s changed this, however, the lack of progress on storing the Maine waste enraged local residents. Attempts were made to export it out of state, however, this never came about. The temporary storage facilities remain in operation in Maine today without a solution enacted.
