Description

Attractive and informative star chart showing the location of major stars between 12 and 34 degrees east and 42 and 51 degrees north. 67 stars are shown and named. A table on the right side of the map provides the exact locations of all the stars.

Star charts such as these were produced during an important period in the development of astronomy when the advent of continuously improving telescopes as well as tools that could accurately measure angles allowed for the discovery and cataloging of new stars. These charts would have had a primarily scientific interest, but knowledge regarding the accurate location of stars allowed for precise geolocation and the creation of more accurate maps of the earth.

This star chart was published as part of Philippo Brietio's Parallela geographicae veteris et novae, which contained several celestial charts as well as numerous world maps.
