Description

Rare later edition of a Lattre map of the Strait of Gibraltar.

The present work is based upon the charts by Hendrik Lynslager, a Dutch navigator.  The chart shows the Strait of Gibraltar, across to Ceuta on the Barbary coast, and extends to Cadiz and Malaga.

A finely engraved compass rose orients the map with north to the left. Pictorial landmarks, anchorages, hazards, currents and soundings make this a wonderfully descriptive sheet.

First issued in 1756, this edition seems to have been issued for booksellers in Paris and Strasbourg.

Jean Lattré Biography

Jean Lattré (fl. 1743-1793) was a Parisian bookseller and engraver who published many maps, plans, globes, and atlases. He worked closely with other important French cartographers, including Janvier, Bonne, and Delamarche, as well as other European mapmakers, such as William Faden, Santini, and Zannoni. Lattré is also interesting due to his propensity to bring suits against those who copied his work; plagiarism was common practice in eighteenth-century cartography and mapmakers struggled to maintain proprietary maps and information.
